A vehicle we had admittedly been eagerly awaiting from Volvo has been revealed this week, the new 2015 Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid luxury crossover SUV.
The new 2015 Volvo XC90 T8 is the top of the line for the company’s all-new XC90 line, the first new product from the brand since the 2010 divorce from Ford Motor Company. The XC90 embodies the bold new direction Volvo is taking in technologies and redefining the brand.
Earlier this summer Volvo shared many of the technical details of their new 2015 XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid luxury crossover SUV. The final image of the exterior styling was kept until now. And now that it’s revealed it doesn’t disappoint.
The 2015 XC90 T8 is striking with a bold shouldered silhouette and a new unscale spin on the traditional Volvo appeal. It has a more formal presentation from the side view, a fresh face, and an even bolder rear three quarter view than before.
15-volvo-xc90-35In defining the future direction of the brand, Volvo made the most powerful XC90 also the most efficient and environmentally responsible. The T8 will have what Volvo calls a “Twin Engine” power-train.
It features a 316 horsepower 2.0 liter four-cylinder Drive-E engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission up front, driving the front wheels. In the rear, an 80 horsepower electric drive unit will allow full hybrid mode as well as EV mode for slower driving.
Volvo says that normal driving is default hybrid mode. Under full power the system pulls power from both the powerful gasoline engine and the rear mounted electric motor for the full 400 horsepower and an astonishing 472 lb.-ft. of torque.
15-volvo-xc90-T8-1The two power-train systems will be able to operate independently as well as together in a variety of driver selectable modes, as well as coordinate ultimate traction for slippery surfaces.
On a side note, in addition to a standard gasoline power-train, a 2.0 liter turbo-diesel will be offered outside of the States which sports an impressive 225 horsepower and 347 ft-lb of torque. Also delivering power through an 8-speed automatic, we can only hope Volvo will offer this vehicle here.
For the new XC90, safety is taken to an entirely new level as you might expect. The 2015 Volvo XC90 builds its safety portfolio first on a robust structure with vast use of high-strength boron steel. Secondly, a multitude of systems react in the event of a crash to reduce injuries.
15-volvo-xc90-36The third layer of safety is the newest for Volvo, which include a new array of crash-prevention systems. These range from the now common driver alerts for lane departures, impending crash, and obstacles to full-on crash avoidance features.
Notable are two new world-first technologies including a sophisticated “run-off road” protection capability as well as a new auto brake at intersection functionality to the crash-prevention portfolio.
The run-off road system comes into play in a scene where you might veer off the highway into surroundings. The system detects the lane departure and impending obstacles and begins a routine of measures. The front safety belts are tightened while a special system in the front seat frames helps to prevent spine injuries by absorbing vertical forces.
15-volvo-xc90-60Auto brake at intersection activates if you make a turn in front of an on-coming car. Radar sensors can detect the oncoming vehicle and should you make that turn, the system can stop your car from proceeding along with a visual and audible warning.
As we have shown you before, the other major move for the 2015 Volvo XC90 is the step up in luxury and interior technology. Volvo says the XC90’s interior is the most luxurious ever as well as offering the best drive experience to date.
Counter to recent Volvo design, the vast sea of buttons has been replaced by a visually simple tablet style touch screen. While some redundant hard controls remain, the new touch screen becomes the heart and soul of controlling ancillary systems.
Abounding are materials like soft leather and wood with handcrafted details, including a gear lever made of crystal glass from Orrefors, the famous Swedish glass maker. The few traditional controls knobs are diamond-cut for a tactile feel.
Seating seven comfortably was a goal for the 2015 Volvo XC90. The new Scalable Product Architecture platform enabled seating placement and design which will afford more space and comfort inside, even for the third row.
The company spent three years and some $11 Billion across all facets of the company to bring the XC90 to this day. Development of the all new Scalable Product Architecture platform, the new Drive-E power-train initiative, and a host of new driver technologies have been developed.
“This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand. This day marks a new era for our company. The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo.
The new 2015 Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid crossover SUV will come to the States in spring of 2015. Final specifications, EPA estimates and pricing will be announced closer to launch time.
